Its sands are a landmark in the history of Bossa Nova. Ipanema is one of the favorite beaches of Rio de Janeiro residents due to its charm and laid-back atmosphere, and is known worldwide for the song “Garota de Ipanema” by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. The beach, which is 2 km long and runs from Arpoador to Jardim de Alah, is a meeting point for young residents and tourists, especially near Posto 9. The beach is used for practicing various sports, as well as hosting open-air concerts. Favorite activities include surfing, beach tennis, volleyball, soccer, and footvolley. Locals and tourists alike often sit on the sand in the late afternoon to chat and watch the magnificent sunset. On Sundays, the waterfront roads are closed to vehicles until 6 pm and are open to locals to enjoy. Bring your bike or skateboard!
